until I started having my heel fixed (at least L/R) that I started getting some control.  Yet Mapple goes so far as to cut out the plate on his front so that his foot is on the *ski* (and, of course, to loop in the rear). Seems he could do with the old mid-ski-slot strap and still do fine! So, what's the deal with both feet in concrete until you fall?  How do the top guns get away without it? L8R Skip

I would say one of the biggest testimonials would be my friend who busted his ankle last November. For starters without hardshells he couldn't have skied for the first few months of the season. Softshells really hurt his recovering ankle.  Second he is skiing far better and more consistently then ever before. He ran his first 32 off pass this year and got 3 at 35 off.  Last year he was running 28 off at 33 mph, but was only getting his 28 off 34 mph's once in a blue moon. Now he rarely misses one. I personally agree with Paul that I don't fall as much because I can ride out situations where I would have lost control in softshells.  Also the points about Andy are pretty valid ones. How many of you can run a mile in less than 5 minutes ?  Andy is an athlete in the true sense and he is in better shape now than must of us will ever be. He also started skiing at a fairly young age. It is also worth noting that Jamie Beauschene won one of the stops of the Open this year and he uses the Fogman Bindings.  So it doesn't look like this bindings get in the way at the really short line lengths in Men's Open.

A few years ago I was reviewing video tape taken by Ken White of Mapple in practice.  What it looked like to Ken and I, in freeze _frame_ is that Mapple's rear heel comes off the ski during his wake crossings. That position would be hard to obtain in double boots. Has anyone else noticed this? Personally, I use a rear toe strap because I like my rear foot cocked so much that some of my heel is off the ski.  I don't have a lot of flexibility in my ankles, so this allows me to bend the lower body without bending at the waist.

Personally, I use a rear toe strap because I like my rear foot cocked so much that some of my heel is off the ski.  I don't have a lot of flexibility in my ankles, so this allows me to bend the lower body without bending at the waist. I wish I felt comfortable that way, but I'm guessing you might have stronger ankles than I do and mine are more flexible. Who knows? I guess the other question to ask is how Wade Cox, Jamie B, Jason Paredes or Jeff Rogers can get into such short line lengths in double high wraps. Wade is on EVA HO Animals, Jamie is on Fogman hard shells, Jason is on KD's EVA bindings and Jeff Rogers looks like he was on Wileys or something when he was still skiing on a Goode and ran that 41 off pass and got into 43 off a little while back. None of them are using a rear toe loop and they all tend to do very well in competition.

or Jeff Rogers can get into such short line lengths in double high wraps. Maybe they have talent? I will admit that the rear toe loop is fading over time. Having boots that angle and flex for different _style_s should provide more control and are probably safer.

Yeah, but it still seems like cheating to me!  ) I wonder whether, like carbon fiber, hard shell boots are a true performance enhancement; or whether they are more of a comfort/convenience item. Seriously, as an alpine snow skier, I know the rigidity of the boot is necessary for that sport.  The control surface is the EDGE of the ski. You're using the boot as a lever to drive the EDGE of the ski into the side of the mountain.  If you tried to do that using a rubber waterski binder on a snow ski, the ski would roll away, and not turn, because you would not have enough mechanical advantage to maintain the edging. In water skiing, however, the control surface is the entire bottom of the ski.  The ski is a hull that you control.  And you control it with your weight
